Most BJJ Teaching is Backwards
My name is Chris "Bones" Burns, a two stripe black belt under Master Rickson Gracie.
Chris "Bones" Burns with Master Rickson Gracie
For my first 10 years in Jiu-Jitsu, I was just getting destroyed. Two medial tendons snapped. Cracked ribs. Torn ligaments. Broken bones. Fingers destroyed. I couldn't even stand up straight because my spine was damaged trying to do some flashy guard.
Most gyms I went to showed me hundreds of techniques. There was no structure.
Week 1: Armbar from closed guard.
Week 2: Escaping mount
Week 3: Wrestling from standing
I was hoping somewhere in the pile of moves I would find something that would work for me before my body broke completely.
But everything changed when I found Rickson and learned what Jiu-Jitsu truly is:
"Jiu-Jitsu is efficiency."
I packed all my stuff, lived out of my car, and invested everything to learn from him.
The key principles he taught me became the antidote to the technique frenzy that dominates sport Jiu-Jitsu today. Now, my mission is to preserve and share the 'Art' he entrusted to me β especially for those who want to train without constant injuries and setbacks.
Now I teach my students the same thing. Get the building blocks right then add the techniques.
You can't build a house without a foundation.
And you can't do jiu-jitsu without understanding these 6 Building Blocks.
